Year-on-Year : Melbourne
The biggest change in the past 12 months is Fox FM losing 1.9%. Nova and Mix are relatively unchanged with Smooth FM making the biggest gain, up 1%.
Over the 12 months, Melbourne has become squeezed. A year ago, Fox FM was clear #1 but now fallen to the same market share as Gold 104. Smooth FM and JJJ were behind the other FM stations. But now courting around Mix 101.1:
Survey 6 : Melbourne
Like Sydney, Melbourne is consistently led by talk radio. Fox FM lost 0.7% and now shares #1 FM station title with Gold 104. Mix 101.1 increased its market share and only 0.1% short of #5 FM station :
- 13.5% - 3AW (Talk/Fairfax)

Year-on-Year : Melbourne
Comparing figures 12 months apart takes into account seasonal listening pattern. JJJ have gained 1.9% and now has more listeners than Mix and the improving Smooth. Mix lost the most with 1.9% falling from 2nd to 6th place. Whilst Fox has lost 1.3% but still remains the most popular station.
Smooth FM
Smooth FM launched in Sydney and Melbourne early 2012. Now participated in 10 surveys, we can observe if they are gaining listeners.
Both stations have been preforming above the survey average throughout 2013 so looking good.
Mix
Mix across the country is split. In Adelaide, it is the clear leader. Along with Brisbane (97.3 FM), is seeing an increase in listeners. Sydney is maintaining its listeners if only floating around a lowly 5%. Whilst Perth and Melbourne are gradually losing their market share.
Survey 5 : Melbourne
Like Sydney, Melbourne is consistently led by talk radio with Fox FM remaining the most popular music station. Mid-table the market share between the other stations is marginal. So MMM fell below Gold 104 and Nova 100. And JJJ jumped over Mix 101.1 and Smooth 91.5 :
- 13.5% - 3AW (Talk/Fairfax)
- 12.4% - ABC 774
- 8.9% - Fox FM (Chart/Southern Cross Austereo)
- 7.8% - Gold 104 (ARN)
- 7.5% - Nova 100 (Chart/DMG)
- 7.0% - MMM (Rock/Southern Cross Austereo)
- 6.3% - JJJ
- 5.7% - Mix 101.1 (Adult Contemporary/ARN)
- 5.4% - Smooth 91.5 (Easy/DMG)
There is little separating the music stations in the market share for listeners 25 & above. Fox FM leads the music stations by dominating the younger age groups. And Gold 104 climbs to 4th by leading 40+ age range :
